Concrete will crack; our job is deciding where. We saw-cut or tool control joints at the right spacing and depth, usually every 8 to 10 feet, so shrinkage cracks stay hidden inside the joints instead of wandering across the surface.

Why do retaining walls lean or bulge out?
Water behind them, nearly every time. Saturated soil is heavy and it expands when it freezes, so a wall with no drainage stone and nowhere for water to escape takes that load every winter and creeps outward. By the time you can see the lean, the fix is usually a rebuild rather than a repair, because the problem is behind the wall where you cannot get at it.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
In most Erie and Niagara County municipalities, walls over four feet do, and some require engineered drawings above that height. Under four feet is usually exempt. We confirm it for your specific location and pull the permit as part of the job.
Can you build a wall out of concrete instead of block?
We can pour cast-in-place concrete walls, and for some situations that is the right answer. For most residential grade changes a segmental block wall is more forgiving in freeze-thaw, because the units can move fractionally instead of cracking, and it can be repaired in sections. We will tell you which fits your site.
Can you fix an existing wall that is starting to lean?
We will look at it honestly. Sometimes a section can be taken down and rebuilt with the drainage it should have had. Often, if the wall was built without stone backfill, rebuilding is the only thing that lasts, and we would rather say that than take money for a repair that buys you two winters.
