Can You Pour Concrete in Winter in Buffalo?

CIT Concrete Buffalo3 min readUpdated 2026

Yes, you can pour concrete in a Buffalo winter, but it takes cold-weather methods and good judgment. Concrete that freezes before it cures loses a large share of its strength permanently, so the goal is to keep it above freezing long enough to set. Sometimes that is practical, and sometimes a project is better off waiting for spring.

Why cold is a problem for fresh concrete

Concrete gains strength through hydration, a chemical reaction that slows dramatically as temperatures drop and effectively stops near freezing. If the water in fresh concrete freezes before it has set, ice crystals disrupt the paste and the slab never reaches its rated strength. The critical window is the first 24 to 48 hours and the first several days after.

How we pour in cold weather

  • Watch the forecast. We schedule exterior pours when overnight lows are forecast to stay above roughly 35 degrees and rising, and we avoid pouring into a hard freeze.
  • Heat the ground. Frozen sub-base has to be thawed before placement so the slab is not poured on frozen ground that will settle when it thaws.
  • Adjust the mix. Accelerating admixtures and a higher cement content help concrete set faster in the cold. We do not rely on calcium chloride where steel reinforcement is present.
  • Insulate and enclose. Insulating blankets and, where needed, heated enclosures hold the concrete above freezing through the critical curing window.
  • Extend cure time. Cold concrete cures slower, so protection stays on longer before the slab takes load.

When a project should wait for spring

Decorative stamped and stained work is harder to control in the cold and usually pours better in the shoulder seasons. Very large flatwork, deep cold snaps, and any job where proper protection is not practical are better scheduled for spring. We will tell you honestly when waiting will give you a better slab, rather than pushing a pour that risks a weak or scaled surface.
